Good Morning America - Good Job!

A television news anchor shines a spotlight on that a successful RTW looks like

As I have watched Good Morning America in the last few months, I've had difficulty in containing my enthusiasm for the show's message on a supportive workplace; a model for a proactive and positive return to work.

It brought tears to my eyes when the co-worker's of Robin Roberts showed up on the set wearing arm bands of support.  These arm bands depicted the protective bandage Robin wore around her upper arm to protect the PIC line where she receives medications for her recently diagnosed rare blood disorder.

It all began when Ms. Roberts, surrounded by  co-workers, told television viewers of her serious illness and upcoming treatment.  When speaking of her job as anchor, she said that it's not that she has to be at work; she WANTS to be at work.  " Your crave normalcy because so much in life is not normal."

Studies show that this wise woman knows where of she speaks.  Working not only minimizes isolation, financial worries, strained family relationships and red tape nightmares, it can be therapeutic.  People who are engaged in work have a a better sense of focus outside their medical condition.  They also enjoy the support of the work community

On the same day that Roberts disclosed her diagnosis, ABC News president Ben Sherwood called a division wide meeting to inform his staff that the division would be behind her 100%.  This kind of support from senior management is crucial to a successful return to work.  It sends a strong message of commitment to all employees and ensures a sense of trust that this policy will be there for them if they need it.

Now, as I watch GMA, it is apparent that Robin is not in attendance due to the need to take a medical leave.  However, she remains a part of the show; by the daily acknowledgment from her co-workers who wait to welcome her back.

My hats off to you GMA and I look forward to  further demonstrations of what a successful return to work looks like!
